Irish goodness I went there craving a nice Irish meal and ordered the shepherd’s pie (my favorite irsh dish with lamb stew) and was pleasently surprised by it. Great presentation and strong flavour. I finished my lunch with a coulant. I normally do not enjoy too chocolaty desserts but i was greedy. Again, surprised, specially by how soft it was, it broke apart easily.
The place itself is.... well, irish, nice music, wooden everything and a chatty and amicable host. All in all, glad i made the effort of going there on my lunch hour.

Fantastic spot Having experienced 3 supposed Irish pubs in Madrid, this place blew them all away, fantastic staff, fantastic food and nothing a problem. Avoid all so called plastic Irish bars in Madrid and come to James Joyce, you will not be disappointed.

Probably one of best pubs I have been in. We were in Madrid for a long weekend and this pub was fortunately in the next street. We normally eat in restaurants but wanted to get a seat for the El Classico match on telly so decided to eat here. Wow so glad we did. Fish and chips and Beef Bourgignon pie were superb. The organisation for the football and overall service were also first class. So much so we returned for food the following evening. This place is so much more than a pub. Second time I had (homemade) Sausages and Mash and yes they were just as good. This is the way a pub doing food should be run. Top marks!!

Recommend the Saturday/Sunday roast This was our first visit to the James Joyce attacted by the idea of the new Saturday roast. We were served a large 'plato combinado' with tender beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, lashings of gravy, a variety of al dente veg (carrots, peas, broccoli, cabbage) and nose & heartwarming horseraddish sauce...All accompanied by an excellent pint of Murphys Red. We finished off with another traditional favourite: sticky toffee pudding with icecream.
Great atmosphere, backround music and décor. Really good value.
We shall be back for the stuffed roast chicken and more beef....

One of the last great Irish Pubs of Madrid A real Irish Pub. The restaurant is located on Calle de Alcala, in the center near the Museo del Prado and Retiro Park, , one step away from the Puerta de Alcala. Food is very good .Service friendly and professional. It has really delicious fish and chips. Perfect for enjoying a good beer. Authentic atmosphere and music. I recommend.

A must visit as a wary traveller I normally avoid Irish bars when abroad, BUT I am glad to say I got the shock of my life whilst visiting the James Joyce pub in Madrid( as the wife wanted FOOD!!) I had the best 3 pints of guinness I've had in a long time, I had a beef and guinness stew topped with beautiful pastry and creamy mashed potatoes while the wife had beer battered cod and chips, both I may add beautifully presented..I can highly recommend this place and look forward to my return..Benny

Fantastic atmosphere My wife and I visited Madrid for the first time as a short break and after walking for miles on the first day trying to get our sense of the area, happened upon this cracking venue right in the heart of the city. Warmly welcomed, great atmosphere, massively friendly and inviting. This became our “go to” place on our walks around the city and today as our last day we had lunch which was THE best idea yet (HIGHLY recommend the fish and chips )
The staff were terrific with us and the pub is spotlessly clean (especially with all the measures in place at present)
It is somewhere we will DEFINITELY be revisiting on our next short break to the city

A great place to have lunch I made several visits to the James Joyce Irish Pub on my recent visit to Madrid. I felt very comfortable and safe there. The covid guidelines were being observed. The tables had lots of space between them and were sanitised between customers. The staff we courteous and friendly. The food was delicious. The fish and chips were so good that I ordered them a second day and they did not disappoint. I look forward to visiting this pub again when I am next in Madrid.

Great for Football Pre booked a table for atletico v liverpool game as knew it was likely to be busy. Was welcomed by name and service throughout was excellent. Had a crack with manager. Drinks were cold and measures large. Food was fine and the match ended favourable. Plenty of fans from different nations. All in all a good 4 hours and recommend as a sports watching venue.

Fantastic atmosphere, Great staff, decent food Visited here during a short trip to Madrid to watch the football. Just myself and my son. We were seated as soon as we walked in and the staff, although really busy, were more than attentive. Never had an empty glass in front of me the whole time we were in. Food was of a high standard and atmosphere fantastic. Would highly recommend

Lunchtime visit We had vegetarian lasagne (recommended by the waiter) & ploughman's salad. They were top-class, very generous, very nicely served & excellent value. It's not often I can get a decent home-cooked vegetarian meal, especially in a pub. I had a small issue with a stained beer glass, which was replaced immediately with an apology & it was removed from the bill. We couldn't ask for more. Well done !

A surprising gem in Madrid. This place is a surprising gem. We had the fish and chips and steak pie, and it was delicious. However the star of the meal was the apple crumble. Gorgeous crunchy crumble was devine. We will be back.

Best Irish bar in Madrid by far! Definitely the best Irish bar in Madrid, unfortunately we only found it on our last day but we will be back!
We had a lot of time to pass until our flights and we were welcomed in for a fantastic full Irish breakfast just as the bar opened. Great value for money at just €10, I didn’t need to eat for the rest of the day!
Staff very friendly and obliging, premises spotless, big screen for the football.. what more could you want!
Location is also excellent, right beside the park and Plaza de Cibeles and all the stunning buildings in the area.
Highly recommended!

My favourite pub One of my favourite places in the world. I began going to the James Joyce as I was new to Madrid and wanted somewhere to watch the football on the weekends. What I found was not only a brilliant and lively place to watch sport with my friends, but a pub with a great selection of beers and cocktails, really tasty food across the menu and friendly staff who I am now lucky enough to call my mates. The owner, Matt, is one of the soundest people I have ever met and is always happy to help. I recommend booking a table on their website if you are looking to watch a popular sporting event.

Everything you want from an Irish bar Went to watch the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix and the pub was full…but after a few minutes got a great table at the back. Staff very friendly and excellent, efficient table service. The food menu is also just what you need for an afternoon on the beer. Ended up staying to watch the Euro 22 final and great atmosphere. Enjoyable day / evening.

Great place and great staff! Visited to catch a match and was blown away by the amazing staff, the food and the Guinness (perfect pour!) Matthew is a great guy who clearly cares about his patrons and his staff. A sign went up at the front when it was fully seated where others would have had the place heaving. Great example of a pub ran by someone who would happily be a customer there. Highly recommended.

Typical Irish Bar Abroad Every city has at least one Irish Bar and Madrid has a couple, but this is the best. When abroad we tend to eat and drink local as we did in Madrid. But when you're struggling to find somewhere to watch the match you can rely on here, friendly staff, great atmosphere, tourists and locals, good choice of beers and great quality pub grub. The manager knows his job ! and good result for the reds.

Visited here with 7 friends Visited here with 7 friends over the weekend , it was our port of call every night as there is always great music and friendly staff, the downside is the size of it, maybe crowd control should be considered by management as the Liverpool and Man Utd match was on the weekend , there was barely room to turn a sweet in your mouth , never mind try and have a pint comfortably, that is if you in fact were able to get a pint in the first place with the crowd , it was madness , and then poor waitressing trying to serve food , it was madness,
All in all a nice place for Irish expats and tourists to have a few pints

Football We visited a few weeks back while on a trip to Madrid as my husband wanted to watch his team play in the Premier League, and we knew the James Joyce would be showing it. When we arrived it was jam packed as Spain were playing Basketball, so the atmosphere was great, and the match hadn't even started yet. They have a great selection of beers and a good menu, we got sandwiches that were very tasty and other people around us who were eating all seemed to be enjoying their meals also. I'd recommend going in for a drink, some food, or to catch some of the sporting events they show on the big TVs. Service was very friendly also.

Smashing authentically owned Irish bar From the first step into the bar the owner made us feel welcome & even took 10 minutes of his time to stop & chat with us. Probably the cheapest pint in the city with the spirits on par! A great place to watch football, drink & eat. I read lots of reviews about the food & the meal everyone seemed to rave about was the fish & chips! Trust me it really is that good!! I'm not a natural fish eater & would never touch tartar sauce at home! The fish is deep, cripy & very tasty, & the addition or red onion to the tartar sauce really does complement the fish! I urge tourists to give this bar a go & prove me wrong!
